The Shofar: Trumpet of the Lord
Posted by foryourfaith on July 20, 2011
The ram’s horn trumpet, or shofar, has been used by the people of Israel since ancient times. It was the shofar that heralded the revelation at Mount Sinai, where there was a “thick cloud upon the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast” (Exodus 19:16). Later, scholars were blown outside the walls of Jericho to cause them to fall. In the Bible, shofars appear frequently – they called the Hebrews to gather, and they announced the fall of their enemies. Although in the daily life of ancient Israel the shofar blast signaled secular as well as spiritual events, it later came to be used almost exclusively in a religious context. Today, the shofar is sounded on the holiest days of the Jewish calendar, and is a remembrance of the ram that Abraham sacrificed instead of Isaac.
